Crews extinguish multiple fires sparked ahead of July Fourth

SALT LAKE CITY — Multiple brush fires were reported in Salt Lake County Thursday night on the eve of July Fourth. While one of the fires burned near structures, there were no reports of injuries or damage to homes.
The first fire of the evening was reported in Memory Grove east of the Utah Capitol. The Salt Lake City Police and Fire departments confirmed the fire was under control before midnight.
Roads were closed while firefighters worked to put out the fire. There was no word on what might have sparked the blaze.
The second fire burned in Cottonwood Heights, and Cpt. Tony Barker with the Unified Fire Authority said wind was pushing the flames toward homes.
The fire reached about two acres in size in the area of 8000 South and Wasatch Boulevard.
The fire was extinguished by 11:15 p.m., according to Barker, and no evacuations were ordered. The captain said UFA’s wildland fire division would be checking on the scene overnight to make sure it didn’t reignite anywhere.
Barker said that police received reports that fireworks were being set off in the area.
