Crossing guard hit, killed in Layton near elementary school

LAYTON — A man in a crosswalk was hit by a vehicle early Tuesday and subsequently died of his injuries, according to Layton police.

It happened in the area of 1600 North and Main Street. The crossing guard was in the crosswalk when the crash happened.

“Our dispatch center got a call that the crossing guard in this location had been struck by a car,” said Lt. Travis Lyman, with Layton City Police Department.

The man was hit at 8:30 a.m. police said. The crash occurred down the street from Vae View Elementary School.

Lt. Lyman said the crossing guard, a 67-year-old man, was in the crosswalk when he was hit by a car headed northbound on Main Street.

He said the driver is cooperating with the investigation.

There were no children in the crosswalk at the time he was hit, but there were children nearby who witnessed the crash, police said. There was also an officer on the scene who witnessed the crash.

“It’s a school zone. There’s a lot of traffic but this is clearly and is controlled by an intersection, so it should be relatively easy to see,” said Lt. Lyman.

Lt. Lyman said the kids who saw what happened went over to the school and police were communicating with the school to work with them to provide resources as they work through this tragedy.

Matthew Park, a Layton resident, said he is in the area on a daily basis.

“There’s a cross guard there everyday that there’s school,” said Park.

Lt. Lyman said at this point in the investigation, it appears the crossing guard was doing things the way he had been trained and was supposed to be working.

As a crossing guard, he works through the Layton City police department.

“It’s just an unfortunate accident and tragedy… He’s one of our family,” said Lt. Lyman.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
