SALT LAKE CITY – A high-speed chase that began in Mantua Saturday afternoon ended in Brigham City after police boxed in the driver and took the suspect into custody, police said.
According to the Mantua Police Department, police attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on U.S. 91 around 2 p.m. The driver allegedly accelerated instead of pulling over, prompting police to pursue with lights and sirens on.
The officer involved began to stop the chase for safety reasons, according to the press release, when Utah Highway Patrol troopers reported that they successfully deployed spike strips, deflating the driver’s tires as the car headed southbound. Police said the car continued southbound toward Box Elder County, where Brigham City Police deployed additional spike strips near the 200 South off-ramp. Despite two successful spike deployments, the driver continued to drive recklessly at high speeds, police said.
“It should be noted that the suspect was traveling at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly, and putting other motorists at risk for the duration of the pursuit,” the press release stated.
A UHP trooper caught the suspect near 775 West 1100 South in Brigham City, where the driver was booked into the Box Elder County Jail for multiple charges, including one felonious evading charge, according to police.
