“Day-of” registration boosting Utah voter turnout

day-of voter registration...

SALT LAKE CITY — More Utah voters are taking advantage of day-of registration to participate in today’s midterm election. They say they want to be part of big changes.

One woman, Katrina, gave only her first name, but today was her first vote ever.

“I can’t complain about what’s going on if I don’t have my say,” she said.

She and David Adjetey tell politicians, “We want them always on the ground to be able to hear the real issues that are happening in our communities.”

“New” voters tell KSL they didn’t get around to registering, or re-registering, before last week’s deadline. Or their late registrations were unprocessed.

The polling place at the Salt Lake County Government Center welcomed everyone, like Leonardo Magalde, openly.

“I think a lot of people just shrug their shoulders and say we don’t really matter,” he said. “I think we have a large demographic where, if we voted, maybe things that we want could be put on the table.”

He wishes more 18-year-olds like him would vote.

Ray Espinoza wants to be part of what could be a “blue wave,” even if it doesn’t reach Utah.

“I believe a lot of people are going to shift Democratic,” he said. In Utah, I feel like it needs to be, compared to recent years, where it’s been really one-sided usually.”

Polls close statewide at 8:00 p.m.
