Explosion in Layton home basement caused by acetone

LAYTON, Utah — Investigators from the Layton City Fire Department say a house explosion on Saturday, April 8, was accidental and caused by acetone. The home is in a newer development near 850 North 2175 West in Layton.

Fire officials said the homeowners were staining the concrete floor of their basement when the explosion happened. 

“Investigators are looking closer at the furnace that has no pilot light but instead uses an electronic igniter,” a statement from Layton Fire said.

During the restoration project, officials said the couple had used approximately five gallons of acetone.

“The homeowners indicated they did some preventative measures to ventilate vapors and control potential ignition sources,” a statement from Layton Fire said.

The basement explosion “heaved” sections of the home’s first floor and “moved interior basement walls,” said officials.

It also blew the side portion of the home onto a neighbor’s residence.

The homeowners are being treated for burns at the University of Utah Burn Center.
