SOUTH JORDAN — Fire crews worked to put out a fire near 9957 S Birdie Way Sunday morning.

At approximately 7:45 a.m., smoke and flames were emitting from the home, according to Ryan Lessner, deputy fire chief with the South Jordan Fire Department.

The two occupants of the home were reportedly evacuated and were unharmed. The home sustained significant damage, Lessner said, most notably in the attic and the roof which was partially collapsed. Lessner said the home would “likely be a total loss.”

Lessner said the fire was moving quickly, but crews successfully got the flames under control with no damage to nearby structures. However, the fire briefly had neighbors wondering if they should take cover.

“I was like, ‘no way,'” Avery Seare, a neighbor, said. “And then I went back downstairs and I started to smell smoke.”

As firefighters got the upper hand, neighbors were still stunned at how quickly it all started.

“I hear my brother open the front door, and he just yells ‘our neighbor’s house in on fire,” Seare said.

The doorbell camera captured the disbelief over what was unfolding just cross the street.

“Our neighbor came running up and told us that we need to get out in case anything were to explode,” Seare said.

In the end, neighbors’ thoughts turned to the homeowners.

“I’m just glad they were able to get out of the house, and that the firefighters were able to get it out so quickly and safely,” Seare said.

Sunday afternoon the investigation was still ongoing.
