Where you can and can’t light personal fireworks this Pioneer Day

SALT LAKE CITY — Personal Pioneer Day festivities may feel a little different this year for some due to a “hybrid” fireworks policy issued by Gov. Spencer Cox.
Utahns can discharge class C common state-approved fireworks on July 22 through July 25, per state code. Times when people can light fireworks are from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., except on July 24 when fireworks can be lit between 11 a.m. and midnight.
However, there are always limitations to where fireworks can or cannot be lit. These include all federal, state and unincorporated county lands, while cities can map out areas fireworks are or aren’t legal.
Cox’s policy for this week drops a statewide ban that was ordered for the Fourth of July holiday, which cities were able to opt out of if they wanted. It also created a clause that allows some cities to determine whether to increase fireworks restrictions this week or continue to ban them entirely, based on wildfire risks as Pioneer Day celebrations carry on.
Here’s how the following cities have decided whether to allow their residents to light fireworks in celebration of Pioneer Day.

The governor said people should still remain cautious with fireworks, even if lighting them in legal areas.
“If high winds, precipitation, or other adverse weather conditions prevail, fireworks discharge should be postponed or discontinued until weather conditions improve,” the Unified Fire Authority said.
Anyone under the age of 16 is not allowed to handle or operate aerial fireworks, firefighters added. Aerial fireworks should be lit at a minimum of 30 feet from any structure or vertical obstruction.
