MIDVALE, Utah — “The Japanese dollar store” is coming — the first Utah Daiso location opens in Midvale this weekend, with a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 17.
The first Utah location joins a roster of over 6,000 locations worldwide. The store offers thousands of unique products featuring Asian flair and affordable prices. It will be located in the Shops at Fort Union, a strip mall centrally located in the Salt Lake Valley.
According to its website, the chain “promise[s] to be a haven for shoppers seeking quality merchandise at affordable prices.”
According to a Facebook event created by Daiso USA, the opening will also mark the chain’s 200th opening.
Early customers could receive a special souvenir. According to the post, the first 200 visitors to spend $20 on opening day will receive a tote bag. On May 18, those who spend at least $20 will get a “special gift” while supplies last.
Monday through Saturday, the store will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. On Sundays, it will operate from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Utah Daiso brings excitement to Japanese-American community
The local Japanese-American community hopes the opening will provide value to the greater community.
“Japanese culture is something that a lot of people want to participate in,” Trey Imamura, member of the Japantown Committee, said.

A screenshot from Daiso U.S. website shows three store openings are planned for Utah in 2025.
Two more Utah Daiso stores are slated to open later this year — one will be in Provo and the other in Clinton. According to the company’s website, they are slated to open in “Summer 2025.”
