Fisherman catches huge Koi in Highland pond

HIGHLAND, Utah — Fishermen typically catch trout, bluegill, bass, and catfish when they throw a line into Highland Glen Pond. But this week, one fisherman caught what he called a bottom feeder.
A Koi fish, typically seen in decorative backyard water installations.
A 16.9 pound Koi fish.
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) told KSL5 TV that the fish never should have been in the pond and that dumping any species of fish into a Utah pond is illegal.
That’s because if the fish isn’t native to the area it can overtake the pond and the pond’s resources.
A Koi fish is in the carp family. The DWR considers the fish invasive, and says the fish end up in places like Highland Glen Pond when someone doesn’t want their pet fish anymore.
Some humane societies offer help to people who need to rehome Koi and other decorative fish. There are also groups on social media that can connect people looking for decorative fish with those who no longer want them.
