HERRIMAN — Three people were taken to the hospital late Saturday night after a traffic accident caused a vehicle to crash into a Herriman business, leading to a large explosion.
The scene was centered around Jimmy John’s and Domino’s located at the intersection of 13400 South and 5200 West.
Three people were hospitalized in various conditions, according to Riverton Police Information Officer Josh Lee. Investigations suggest three vehicles were involved in an accident, causing at least one to hit the building, “rupturing a gas line and igniting a massive fire,” according to a post on X by the Unified Fire public information officer.
The Unified Fire Authority said that “two courageous bystanders risked their lives to rescue the driver and passenger from the burning vehicle just moments before it was engulfed in flames.”
Over 60 firefighters reportedly responded from the Unified Fire Authority, South Jordan, West Jordan, West Valley City, and Sandy departments.
Videos obtained by KSL showed an explosion, flames and a large response by emergency personnel. No firefighters or police were injured, according to the Unified Fire Authority.

The Herriman Police Department sent out an emergency alert just after 10:30 p.m. asking residents in the area of 5100 West and 13400 South to leave the area and get to a safe location. That evacuation notice was centered on Terra Cruz Lane and Parasol Lane due to concerns of a gas leak. All evacuation orders had been lifted just after 1:00 a.m.
The department announced on X that it was working alongside the Unified Fire Authority and Riverton Police Department. Police confirmed that 13400 South would be closed in both directions until further notice.
Herriman Mayor Lorin Palmer released the following statement about the accident:
“Our thoughts are with all of those affected by the tragedy on 134th South tonight. To those involved in the accident, to those businesses affected by the fire, and to the employees that were on scene…we are thinking of you!
Thank you to those first responders that handled such a crazy scene with such professionalism! We have amazing teams that are the best at what they do!
And to the dozens of residents that reached out offering to open their homes or to volunteer at an evacuation center…thank you! I love how we respond to these unfortunate events in our city…we truly live in a great community!
Prayers again to all involved tonight!”
