SALT LAKE CITY — Funeral services for Officer Eric Estrada and Sgt. Lee Sorensen are set for Thursday and Friday, with a public viewing scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

The fallen officers have been hailed as heroes after they were tragically killed in the line of duty on Sunday, Aug. 17.

Community members have several opportunities to honor the two men in the coming days. Here’s information on services, viewing, a funeral procession and more:

Wednesday viewing at Bear River High

A public viewing for Estrada and Sorenson will take place at Bear River High School on Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the day before funeral services begin.

KSL TV will carry a special broadcast at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday that will include coverage of the deadly shooting, as well as reporting on the lasting legacy of Estrada and Sorensen.

Services at Utah State University

Funeral services for Estrada and Sorensen are set for 10 a.m. on Thursday and Friday, respectively, and will take place at the Spectrum on the Utah State University campus.

The Tremonton Garland Police Department provided information for those wishing to attend the funeral services:

The department said parking will be available to the public at four church parking lots northwest of the Spectrum, and shuttles would be provided to get people to and from the lots, starting at 8:30 a.m.

“Please plan appropriately and arrive early to give you time to get into your seats before services begin,” the department said.

Tremonton-Garland PD said general seating will be available to the public inside the Spectrum for both funerals, but graveside services for both officers will be private, family gatherings.

Information on seating arrangements can also be found in the Facebook post above. KSL NewsRadio will carry the audio from both funerals on 102.7 FM and 1160 AM.

University impacts

The Department of Public Safety said people should expect the area around the campus to be extremely busy on the days of the funerals, and people may notice road delays in the mornings as the fallen officers are transported to the Spectrum from their funeral homes.

USU Parking and Transportation Director Tracy Hulse said the school is planning ahead to accommodate for the large number of people expected to be there for the funerals.

Hulse said USU hasn’t hosted an event like this during school hours, at least since he’s been there, but they have plans in place to help mitigate the impacts to students and faculty who’ll need to park and get around campus.

The school is asking students and faculty who usually park near the Spectrum to instead park in designated lots further east. Hulse said the Aggie shuttle will be making runs through there to bring people to central campus.

Hulse advised students and faculty to allow for 10-15 extra minutes to get to class on Thursday and Friday. A small inconvenience, Hulse said, but he hopes Logan residents appreciate the opportunity to honor two fallen heroes.

“I feel honored to be able to help in a small way, and hopefully that sentiment is shared by most,” Hulse said.

Traffic advisories

On Friday, following Sorensen’s funeral, a procession will travel from the Spectrum in Logan to the Tremonton-Garland area.

This procession will consist of family members and many representatives of police departments, Sheriff’s Offices, and Fire Departments. It is estimated there could be as many as 500 to 1000 vehicles in the procession,” the Logan City Police Department said.

The procession is expected to begin around noon on Friday, following this route:

It will then continue west on state Route 30 on to Tremonton.

“It is anticipated this procession may take 45 minutes to 1 hour to clear 1000 N from 800 E to 1000 W and 1000 West from 1000 North to 200 North,” the police department said. “There will be no traffic allowed to travel north or south on any streets crossing 1000 North in Logan while the procession is coming through or from 200 North to 1000 North on 1000 West.”

Logan PD said there will be significant traffic congestion and delays in the area and urged drivers to plan ahead.

We want to hear from you.
