SALT LAKE CITY — Giovanni Pangan, a mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in the Philippines Iloilo mission, has died.

A Church spokesman said that President Giovanni Pangan, age 48, died on Tuesday in the Philippines.  A heart attack is the suspected cause of death.

“President Pangan, age 48, had been serving as a mission president since July 2019. He was from the Legazpi Philippines Stake, where he was serving as stake president at the time of his call,” said Church spokesman Sam Penrod.

“President Pangan is survived by his wife and mission companion, Sister Nenette Locsin Mantes Pangan, along with their son and daughter”, said Penrod. “We express our love and support to President Pangan’s family and to all of the missionaries in the Philippines Iloilo Mission who have served under this faithful leader,” he said.

According to a Church website, Pangan succeeded President Hermenegildo Cruz and Sister Emily Cruz. He was born in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines to Benjamin Valledor Pangan and Catalina Penaso Pelin.
