SALT LAKE CITY – Search and Rescue teams were busy in Grand County this week, reporting three rescues in two days.

On Tuesday, a BASE jumper struck a wall during a jump near Ida Gulch along the Colorado River, according to a Facebook post from the Grand County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue. The BASE jumper was injured, but landed “successfully across the river from the Rocky Rapid boat ramp,” the post said.

Search and Rescue personnel reportedly used a boat to cross the river, then carried the jumper to a medical helicopter that had landed nearby. The jumper was taken to a hospital, although his condition was not immediately released.

At approximately noon on Wednesday, a hiker “took a serious ground-level fall” along a switchback portion of the Hidden Valley Trail, the post said.

The Search and Rescue team, along with medical personnel, reportedly hiked up to the hiker and transported them down the trail to an ambulance.

The group reached the ambulance at approximately 3 p.m., the post said, then the person was taken to a hospital. Their condition was not immediately available.

The Grand County Search and Rescue said later on Wednesday evening, the team was asked to aid medical personnel with a person “experiencing weakness, nausea, and disorientation” on the Mill Creek Trail.

The person was approximately half a mile from the trailhead, the post said. The person was wheeled to an awaiting ambulance and taken to a hospital.

The Search and Rescue team said temperatures in Moab had surpassed 100 degrees this week and urged people to plan ahead when recreating outdoors.

“Please plan ahead and try to start your activities early in the day,” the team said on Facebook. “Pre-hydrate by drinking plenty of water the day before and the morning of your activity.”

The team also suggested people pack electrolytes, salty snacks, and a map during outdoor excursions.

“Bring more water than you think you need,” the post said. “Things don’t always go as planned. Even moderate activities can become strenuous on a hot day. Your “extra” water could save your life or the life of someone else!”

We want to hear from you.
