Harmful algae detected in Blackridge Reservoir

SALT LAKE CITY — A post from Herriman City on X said officials recently detected harmful algae in Blackridge Reservoir. The discovery prompted a closure of the water.
Herriman City did not specify which type of algae was detected. However, it warned visitors against ingesting the water. Pets should also be kept away.
Water activities, including kayaking and paddleboarding, have been prohibited for the time being.
Health effects of harmful algae
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, harmful algal blooms begin when colonies of the organism begin growing uncontrollably and release toxins into water.
Harmful algae blooms can harm the organisms living in water, such as fish, as well as those outside the water, like birds and humans.
Exposure symptoms
The Centers for Disease Control explained that some strains of harmful algae can impact skin, causing rashes and irritation. Others must be ingested or inhaled, such as through swallowing water or inhaling droplets.
Aside from rashes, exposure can also result in headaches, stomach pain, rashes, sore throat and coughing. Severe cases may lead to seizures, heartbeat irregularities or liver damage.
If you believe you have been exposed, the CDC recommends contacting a healthcare provider or your local poison control center.
Pets can also be harmed by toxic algae — contact a veterinarian immediately if they begin vomiting, stumbling, having seizures or display a loss of energy.
The CDC advised avoiding contact with any water that appears to be discolored, smelly or “scummy.”

Causes
Per NOAA, the factors that contribute to toxic blooms are known, but scientists have not figured out why they merge to create danger. Some studies have shown that favorable wind patterns and water currents play a role.
The State of Michigan said blooms can last anywhere from just a few days to several months.
