Highland to allow golf carts on public roads, with some limitations

HIGHLAND — Highland has approved golf carts for city driving — it’s the first city in Utah County to do so.

Before setting out on a drive, know these rules: Drivers must be 18 years or older, and the carts can’t be taken out after dark or on state roads.

Golf carts are also only allowed on streets where the speed limit is 25 miles per hour. Highland City Council member Ron Campbell brought up the speed limit.

“That’s a compromise for me because I really would like to see a 30 or 35 (mph speed limit), but I’m willing to make that compromise to get it moving forward. Then, with experience, we can fine-tune it,” Campbell said.

In discussions, the council indicated they would like to pass the law as it is, and then watch for any modifications down the line. The council said they can change the limit rules after getting more experience with the new ordinance.
