SALT LAKE CITY — Two minors were arrested at Highland High School on Monday after police responded to reports of suspicious activity in nearby Sugar House Park.
On Monday, Sgt. Miles Southworth with the Salt Lake City Police Department said they were dispatched on a report of suspicious circumstances and possible shots fired. Police were not able to determine if there were any gunshots.
Yandary Chatwin with the Salt Lake County School District said the school was placed on secure status for approximately 20 minutes due to the police activity in Sugar House Park. That means business continued as usual inside the school, except nobody was allowed in or out.
Sgt. Greg Wilking with SLCPD said that although the incident happened off school property, the two juveniles were eventually found on Highland’s property.
Chatwin confirmed police received a tip that the people involved in the incident in the park were spotted inside Highland High, in a bathroom. They were arrested Monday after the school day ended.
Wilking said the two minors were booked into detention on accusations of possession of a weapon by a restricted person. Chatwin said one of them had a gun, and the other had ammunition.
The police were still trying to determine whether there were gunshots in the area, but Wilking said there were no reports that anyone was injured.
Since the two people arrested were minors, no further information was released.
