SPRINGDALE, Washington County — Four lost hikers were hoisted by search and rescue crews after they had gone down the wrong canyon during a day hike on Saturday.

Sgt. Jacob Paul with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office stated that at approximately 9:20 p.m., the office received a report indicating that the group was supposed to have completed their hike in the Kolob Terrace Road area.

“Shortly after we received this report, we received a satellite text message from the lost group. The group was located about two miles east of West Rim Trailhead in a slot canyon,” Paul told KSL.

The hikers told the sheriff’s office that they were lost and had gone down the wrong canyon.

Paul said the group did have food and water, but were worried about staying overnight in the wet conditions.

A Utah Highway Patrol helicopter was called to assist in the rescue, but the chopper was unable to do a night hoist at the time.

Paul said the search and rescue team responded to where the group was and met up with them at a ledge above the group as daylight was fading.

The UHP helicopter was able to respond to the rescue and hoisted the lost hikers out of the canyon by 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Paul said none of the hikers were hurt in this rescue.
