KEARNS — Several homes were evacuated in Kearns early Thursday after police said there was an explosion threat stemming from an overnight domestic violence situation.

According to Sgt. Aymee Race with the Unified Police Department, at approximately 2 a.m., a caller reported a person had returned to a home near the area of 4500 West and 5100 South, where they were prohibited from going by a protective order.

Race said the home belonged to the person, but they were not allowed in the residence. She couldn’t give further details about the court order to protect the victim in the case.

When KSL TV arrived at the scene, police said nobody was inside the home with the person, but they were making threats that officers found concerning to the public. Race said the threats could have caused an explosion due to a gas line.

A SWAT team responded, evacuations were made to the surrounding homes and the gas line was turned off, Race said.

Law enforcement negotiators were working to get the person to come out safely until approximately 7 a.m., when the matter was resolved, police said. Unfortunately, the family was informed just afterward that the person inside the home had died.

Race said law enforcement officers did not fire their weapons at all.

Nearby schools were not affected, and classes were expected to start on time.
