SALT LAKE CITY — Police found human remains in a trash bag in Brigham City in April. On Wednesday, they announced they had determined the victim’s identity.
The Brigham City Police Department said DNA testing revealed the victim was Brandy M. Hickey, who would have been 42 when she was found.
The police department said Hickey had been living in St. George and had connections in Salt Lake City when she went missing.
“Detectives reached out to her family to notify them she had been found. They have also been reaching out and contacting her associates to collect information,” police said. “The last known contact with her was in 2021.”
Brigham City PD said Hickey’s death was being investigated as a homicide, and detectives were “diligently pursuing every available lead to identify and bring the offender to justice.”
Initially, it was difficult for authorities to identify the remains due to the advanced state of decomposition they were found in. The police department said an independent DNA testing lab was eventually able to positively identify Hickey.
“We would like to emphasize that every member of our community has value, and it is unacceptable for anyone to be harmed and discarded in such a callous and inhumane manner,” the department said. “The Brigham City Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to seeking justice for Brandy and her loved ones.
The department asked anyone with information, “even the smallest detail,” to call 435-734-6684 or email investigators at detectives@bcutah.gov.
