SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Transportation will perform bridge beam repairs over Interstate 215 at the mouth of Parley’s Canyon nightly from Thursday until Oct. 25.

As early as 9 p.m., crews will close I-215 near Tanner Park to repair three beams of the eastbound bridge. Interstate 80 will remain open throughout the night, and I-215 will reopen by 6 a.m. each morning.

According to UDOT Public Relations Director John Gleason, UDOT officials believe that the bridge was damaged by an oversized truck earlier this year.

“It’s damage that we want to get fixed so that we can get the life out of the bridge that we expect,” Gleason said in an interview with KSL NewsRadio. “[The damage] doesn’t look significant, but it is work that needs to happen.”

Gleason said without the intervention now, the damage may become worse “years down the road.”

Gleason said crews were trying to avoid working during heavy traffic periods to “get people to where they’re going safely and efficiently.” He said there would be no road closures during the day, only at night.

Drivers using state Route 186 to Foothill Drive should avoid the Reno/Cheyenne exit leading to I-80, as the ramp connects to I-215 and will lead directly to the closure. These drivers would then be forced to travel through Parley’s Canyon until Mount Aire Canyon Road to turn around.

During each closure, drivers on I-215 will be directed to Foothill Drive.

Additional road work

Drivers in northern Utah should also be aware of road closures on southbound I-15 between Riverdale Road and 5600 South this weekend.

On Friday night from 7 p.m. to Saturday at 7 a.m., southbound I-15 will be reduced to two lanes of traffic while crews work on pipes and drainage. The following evening from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m., southbound I-15 will be reduced to a single lane while crews replace concrete panels.

Gleason reminded drivers, “All construction schedules are weather dependent and subject to change. Drivers are encouraged to check udottraffic.utah.gov or the UDOT Traffic app for the latest updates on closures, detours and travel conditions.”
