SALT LAKE CITY — It’s no secret that fireworks can be frightening for pets. In fact, according to Camp Bow Wow, about 82% of dogs fear fireworks. And that panic can put your pooch in a precarious predicament.

So, in the spirit of safety and to keep your critters from coming to harm, here are some tips for K-9 safety while fireworks light up the sky.

In a press release from Camp Bow Wow, animal health and behavior expert, Erin Askeland, shared these five tips.

  1. Create a safe environment.
    • Put your pet in a quiet room, far from crowds and unfamiliar locations.
    • Use calming music, white noise, fans, or other sources of sound to block out external noise.
  2. Keep your dog leashed and identifiable.
    • Ensure that your dog is wearing a collar with ID tags at all times. If your pet is chipped, make sure their registration is up to date.
    • Make sure your dog is on a leash and supervised during potty breaks.
  3. Exercise your dog early in the day.
    • Get that energy out! Play with or walk your dog early in the day, before crowds and fireworks become a concern.
    • Look at options for indoor play, like hide-and-seek.
  4. Distract your dog.
    • Long-lasting treats, interactive toys, etc. Something that can hold your pup’s attention while the fireworks go off.
    • For best results, give it to your dog 5-10 minutes before the fireworks start.
  5. Consult your vet.
    • There are some options for calming aids you can give your dog during fireworks displays. Your vet would be able to help you make an informed decision.

As we celebrate Independence Day and Pioneer Day this year, be sure to separate dogs and fireworks to keep our furry friends feeling fine.
