Man flees hit-and-run, crashes into pond while driving under the influence, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — A man is in police custody after police said he flipped his car into a small body of water while allegedly fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run and driving under the influence.

Sgt. Jeff Smith with the West Valley City Police Department said police first received reports of the incident at approximately 10:18 p.m.

While responding to the crash, Smith said police received reports of a hit-and-run involving a UTA bus, and that the car in the body of water matched the description of the vehicle involved.

Upon their arrival, police found a vehicle had gone off the north side of the road and was upside down in a body of water between 2200 South and eastbound 201. They also heard a man inside the vehicle.

Several firefighters and at least one police officer entered the water to help the man out of his vehicle.

Smith said the man was in his mid-50s and showed “heavy signs” of alcohol use. He had no obvious injuries when first responders helped him out of the body of water.
