Teenager hit by box truck while attempting to retrieve electric motorcycle from roadway

SALT LAKE CITY — A 13-year-old boy was injured on Friday night after being hit by a box truck while attempting to move his electric motorcycle out of the road in Snyderville.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said the boy had been involved with a crash, while him and another 13-year-old were riding electric motorcycles on Kilby Road near an intersection at 2200 west, at 11 p.m.

The sheriff’s office said one of the boys was injured and ended up in the roadway while the other was able to move out of the road.

“A passerby driving a truck equipped with a forward-facing spotlight stopped to assist the boys,” the sheriff’s office said. “In an attempt to illuminate the area, the passerby activated the spotlight, parked the vehicle, and went to render aid. The passerby then moved the injured boy out of the roadway.”

According to the sheriff’s office, the passerby was helping the boy who was injured when the other 13-year-old went to move one of the motorcycles out of the road. That’s when police said the boy and the motorcycle was hit by a box truck and run over.

“The driver of the box truck reported that they did not see the boy or the motorcycle in the roadway due to the bright spotlight obstructing their view,” the sheriff’s office said.

Police said the 13-year-old who was hit by the box truck was taken to the hospital and his family said he is expected to be okay.

The sheriff’s office said the crash was still under investigation.
