SALT LAKE CITY — The driver of a motorcycle died on Tuesday night after a crash with an SUV in West Valley City.
Lt. Julie Jorgensen with the West Valley City Police Department said the SUV was traveling west on 4100 South when the driver turned left in front of a motorcycle while attempting to head south on Charles Drive. The move caused the motorcyclist to hit the SUV.
“The driver of the motorcycle was pronounced deceased at the scene by West Valley City Fire Department,” Jorgensen said.
According to Jorgensen, the driver of the SUV remained on scene and was one of the callers who reported the crash to police at 11:15 p.m.
The motorcyclist was a 20 to 30-year-old man, Jorgensen said.
A second motorcycle crash, hours later
Another crash on Interstate 80 hours after the West Valley City crash critically injured another motorcyclist, Sgt. Mike Alexander with the Utah Highway Patrol said.
According to Alexander, a vehicle struck the motorcyclist around 3:29 a.m. early Wednesday. The driver of the motorcycle was transferred to the hospital in a medical helicopter.
“I think with the warm weather we’ve had this late in the fall, it’s kept the motorcycle riders out and enjoying the warmer weather,” Jorgensen said. “And other drivers really need to be aware of the motorcyclists and understand that even though it’s the end of November that they’re still on the road. So we need to be aware of them and give them the space they need.”
The West Valley City crash is still under investigation.
