SALT LAKE CITY — A trailblazer in American aviation is being celebrated today: Nell “Mickey” Stevenson Bright, one of just four living members of the Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, who flew military aircraft during World War II.

Born in 1921 in Canyon, Texas, Nell first experienced flight at age eight when she rode in a World War I biplane. That moment sparked a lifelong passion for flying.

In 1943, she completed training at Avenger Field as part of the WASP program. During her service, Nell piloted various military planes, ferried aircraft cross-country, and towed targets for live-fire training—roles that broke gender barriers at the time.

Although the WASPs were disbanded before the war ended and initially denied military recognition, Nell continued to advocate for her fellow pilots. In 1977, they were granted veteran status. In 2009, the WASPs received the Congressional Gold Medal in honor of their service.

A lifetime of defying expectations

After the war, Nell built a new career—first at Luke Air Force Base, and later as one of the first female stockbrokers in Phoenix. She stayed in the financial world for five decades before retiring at 85.

Even into her later years, she’s made it her mission to share the WASP legacy—appearing in documentaries, educational events, and interviews to ensure these stories aren’t forgotten.

Celebrating 104 remarkable years

Nell Bright’s 104th birthday is being celebrated with family, friends, and fellow WASP survivors. The event highlights not only her extraordinary life but also the resilience and courage of a generation of women who rewrote history.

Her daughter said it best:

“Born in ’21, so as a woman she’s done many things that yes, women can do—but for her generation, very much ahead of her time.”

Even today, Nell carries the same spark and determination that once took her to the skies.

A lasting legacy

Nell Bright’s journey is one of courage, service, and history-making achievement. At 104, her story continues to inspire new generations to aim higher—and to remember the women who paved the way.

Happy birthday, Nell.

We want to hear from you.
