SALT LAKE CITY — A two-alarm fire completely destroyed an apartment building that was under construction in Ogden on Friday night.

The Ogden Fire Department said an incomplete 3-story apartment building “had heavy fire involvement” on the 100 Block of 18th Street around 11:55 p.m.

“Firefighters acted swiftly to protect exposed buildings while putting large amounts of water on the burning structure,” the fire department said. “The structure was surrounded by fire apparatus and within an hour the fire was extinguished.”

According to the OFD, the fire burned the apartment building down within an hour of it catching fire. While the building was burning, a second fire started nearby as the first fire was being tended to by at least 35 firefighters.

“During this incident a grass fire started on the 700-west block of 17th street, this fire is also under investigation as this may have been embers from the original fire on the 100 block of 18th street,” the fire department stated.

The unfinished apartment building was a total loss due to the fire, according to the OFD.

“The building is a total loss, and further evaluation of the exposed structures will be done in the morning,” the OFD said. “We commend the professionalism, coordination, and swift action of all personnel involved. The combined efforts of local fire departments, Ogden Police, and Ogden Public Works were instrumental in managing the incident and preventing further damage.”

Damages to the apartment building cost around $3 million, and the Ogden Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire with the help of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

There were no injuries reported at the scene of the fire, however one truck sustained damage due to the fire.
