Ogden’s 25th Street nominated for USA Today’s Best Main Street

OGDEN, Utah — Visit Ogden announced that 25th Street has entered the running for USA TODAY’s 2024 Best Main Street.
According to a press release, the nomination highlights the historic street’s importance to the community.
“We are incredibly honored to be recognized by USA TODAY’s judging panel,” said Taylor Hartman, Visit Ogden’s director of marketing and communications.
People can vote for their favorite of the selected Main Streets once per day until April 8. The results of USA TODAY’s Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards 2024 will be revealed on April 17.
“This is a chance for the community and supporters nationwide to rally behind Ogden and help highlight it as a leading destination on the national stage,” said Hartman.
History
The Golden Spike joined the transcontinental railroad just 50 miles away from Union Station.
Travelers passed through Ogden via the railroad. Additionally, immigrants arrived in Ogden. Along with people came crime, illicit activities, and vices.
The street became infamous for brothels, gangs, and speakeasies in the early 20th century, per the Ogden Downtown Alliance.
Additionally, 25th Street gained nicknames such as Electric Alley and Notorious Two-Bit Street.
Nowadays, the lively street is home to destinations for those looking to explore Ogden art, food, and culture. Ogden Downtown Alliance said the railroad helped it become what it is today.
“From our historic architecture to our diverse local businesses and vibrant arts scene, we love the heart of our city,” said Hartman.
