1 man dead following Salt Lake City shooting involving police Friday night

SALT LAKE CITY — One man died Friday evening following a shooting in Salt Lake City involving police.

Detective Michael Ruff McNeil with the Salt Lake City Police Department said the shooting occurred just after 6:30 p.m. Officers responded to a weapons call with a possible suicidal person at a residence in the area of 100 West and Lucy Avenue.

A SLCPD news release said the person, a man, went back inside the residence by the time officers arrived. Police then requested additional resources while “taking cover behind a truck on the street.”

According to McNeil, the man at the residence came out with a firearm shortly after officers took positions around the residence.

The SLCPD news release stated at least “four officers shot at the man” after he went outside with the firearm.

The man died at the scene and officers involved with the incident were placed on administrative leave, according to SLCPD.

McNeil said the investigation is being handed over to Protocol Team three, which is led by the West Valley Police Department.
