SALT LAKE CITY — Although some humans enjoy the loud blasts and colorful displays that light up the night sky on Independence Day, pets don’t. Here are some Fourth of July pet safety tips to keep your four-legged friends happy and safe.

According to the American Humane Society, July 5 is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. They’re tasked with caring for animals that fled the loud bangs of fireworks.

Oftentimes, these pets are found miles from their homes.

“With these tips and tricks, we can keep our furry companions relaxed throughout the holiday,” American Humane Society President and Chief Executive Officer Robin Ganzert said.

Before the Fourth arrives

The American Humane Society said training may help in some cases. They recommend reaching out to an animal behaviorist to identify appropriate interventions that may help your companion overcome their fear of loud, sudden noises.

Similarly, some stress-reducing products are available. Along with Fourth of July pet safety tips, the American Humane Society recommended products containing pheromones, which can provide feelings of tranquility.

The product you will need depends on your pet’s species. For example, PetMd recommended Adaptil for dogs and Feliway for cats. These products come in a variety of formats, including wipes, collars and sprays.

In some cases, medication may also be helpful. Consult a vet ahead of time to decide if a prescription is right for your animal.

Fourth of July pet safety tips for the big night

Pets that are frightened by loud noises, like thunder or slamming doors, are terrified by fireworks. The American Humane Society advised leaving them at home if you go out to see displays.

It’s crucial that they’re left inside, where they’ll be protected from loud noises and unable to escape. If possible, the organization recommended that someone stay with anxious pets.

Those who stay back can also take steps to comfort stressed animals. Petting them and remaining calm can help them relax.

What to do if your pet goes missing?

Sometimes the unexpected happens. The American Humane Society advised ensuring that your pet is microchipped ahead of time and that associated contact information is up to date.

Microchips are a small piece of technology, about the size of a grain of rice, that can be implanted beneath a pet’s skin. They do not allow GPS tracking, but rather store owner contact information. When a shelter or veterinarian uses radio scanning technology, a frequency activates the chip, revealing the information.

Putting identification tags on your pet’s collar is also recommended. When they display up-to-date information, they can help others reach you if they find your pet.

We can make sure that the Fourth of July is a joyful occasion for everyone, including our beloved animals,” said Ganzert.

We want to hear from you.
