CACHE VALLEY, Utah — Two people affiliated with USU Aviation are dead after a plane crashed near Wellsville, Utah around 9 a.m.

Utah State University confirms it was one of their planes and that the crash involved one of their instructors, Blake Shumway, and student Michael Carpenter.

Authorities have notified the families of those who died, and all USU flights have been canceled for the rest of the day.

“We are devastated by this morning’s tragic crash and the loss of members in our USU community,” said USU President Noelle E. Cockett in a statement. “Every student and employee is part of our Aggie family, and we know many individuals will feel this loss deeply.”

Shumway has worked for USU Aviation as an instructor since September 2021. He was certified as a flight instructor.

Carpenter was scheduled to graduate this coming fall. He was majoring in aviation technology/professional pilot program.

The university said they will be working with their staff as well as students in the USU Aviation program to help with services, including counseling.
