SALT LAKE CITY – More development and more safety issues are fueling concerns about the future of State Street in Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake.

But city planners have a goal: to make “Life on State” great for people.

“To gather, to eat dinner, live” said Salt Lake City Urban Designer Molly Robinson. “There’s new housing that’s going in.

“There’s a lot of redevelopment in South Salt Lake on State Street on either side of the S-line,” the light-rail train.

Robinson is gathering ideas through public workshops to determine the future of the street, which is owned by UDOT.

“We’ve got about 35,000 vehicles that travel on this portion of State Street every day,” said UDOT Spokesman John Gleason.

“We would be concerned with any decisions that would increase congestion.”

It will have input on possible lane reductions and intersection restructuring.

Salt Lake City Police report 38 pedestrian accidents, and 28 biker accidents, on State Street in the past two years, the most of any Salt Lake street.

Officials are seeking public comment about “Life on State.”
