Police: 12-year-old boys started fire at Bear River Middle School

BOX ELDER COUNTY — Two 12-year-old boys were taken into custody after police say they started a fire Thursday night near Bear River Middle School.
“They started a small fire and were throwing pieces of garbage on fire, when it started the bushes on fire. It burned the eave and the school camera and a speaker on the corner,” said Garland Police Chief Chad Soffe.
Fire crews kept the fire from spreading to the roof and starting the school on fire.
Garland City police tweeted pictures where you can see the damage to the outside of the building and the shrubs in the corner.

Police say a witness saw the kids running from the scene, and knew one of them by name. Police went to that boy’s house, and he reportedly admitted to playing with fire.
Charges are expected to be screened, probably reckless burning.
“We are pretty sure it was an accident to set the bushes on fire, but they intentionally started the small fire. We don’t believe they intentionally tried to burn the middle school,” said Soffe.
