SALT LAKE CITY — Police safely arrested a 21-year-old person of interest in a homicide investigation on Sunday morning.
The South Salt Lake Police Department said Salman Ahmed was connected to a homicide that occurred on Saturday.
“[Ahmed] is a person of interest in a homicide investigation that occurred on (Saturday) at 11:40 p.m. near 2531 S 400 E,” the police department said.
According to court records, Ahmed was also arrested on Nov. 18, 2022 in connection with a Nov. 11, 2022 shooting, which resulted in the death of an 18-year-old. At the time he was arrested for that homicide, he was charged with murder, felony discharge of a firearm, and obstruction of justice.
According to another set of court records, Ahmed was also arrested on July 11, 2023 in connection with selling cocaine.
A police affidavit said an undercover officer was in contact with Ahmed, who police said was selling cocaine on social media. The affidavit stated Ahmed met up with the undercover officer at a high school parking lot, where he then exchanged cocaine with the officer for money. Ahmed was allowed to drive away, not knowing he was being followed by police, when he proceeded to make multiple driving violations.
The affidavit said Ahmed fled from police after being asked to step out of his vehicle by an officer who pulled him over. Utah Highway Patrol chased him in their vehicles, until stopped at a rest area in Kaysville.
At that rest stop, officers saw him throw a fanny pack into a bush.
“A search of the fanny pack revealed a fully loaded handgun and a white powdery substance,” police stated. “The white powdery substance field tested positive as cocaine.”
Ahmed was arrested with charges of distribution of a controlled substance in a drug free zone, failure to stop or respond at a command police, possession of a dangerous weapon by restricted, two counts of obstruction of justice, possession or use of a controlled substance, interference with arresting officer, reckless driving, use of handheld device to text/email while operating a vehicle, plates to be visible from 100 feet, traffic control signal violations and a failure to stay in one lane.
