TOOELE — A person was taken into custody in Tooele on Thursday after police believed someone may have fired shots. Several nearby schools were briefly placed on secure status.
Sgt. Shawn Sagers with the Tooele Police Department said the incident happened in the area of 320 West and 200 South. That intersection is between West Elementary School, Tooele Junior High School and Tooele High School.
Sagers said tactical teams negotiated with a person and took them into custody. There were no reports of any injuries, and it was not immediately confirmed whether any shots were actually fired.
Brett Valdez, communications director for the Tooele County School District, said Tooele High School, West Elementary School, North Lake Elementary School and Tooele Junior High School were put on secure status at approximately 9:30 a.m. Secure status meaning operations continue normally but nobody is allowed into the school. The secure lasted for about 30 minutes.
Valdez said nothing happened in any school or on school grounds.
“We would like to thank our partner agencies, including the Tooele County Sheriff’s Office, for their quick response,” the Tooele City Police Department said. “This is an open and active investigation.”
