Police worked Monday, May 22, 2017, to recover more remains after discovering what is believed to be a skull beneath a Spanish Fork cellar.

SPANISH FORK — A Spanish Fork man uncovered what he believes is a human skull in his cellar Monday, bones police believe may belong to a woman missing from the area since 1988.

Peggy Sue Case lived in the home at 80 North and 800 East with her boyfriend just before her disappearance. Spanish Fork Police Lt. Matt Johnson said investigators searched the area at the time.

“They actually searched underneath the residence here as well as in the cellar, actually digging up the soil in the cellar at that time,” Johnson said, but police didn’t find any evidence.

Monday’s discovery was prompted by the current tenant, who is moving out of the home and noticed part of the dirt in the cellar floor was sinking. The man, unidentified by police, decided to dig down and see what was wrong, only to uncover what police believe is a human skull. Now Johnson said, investigators have been digging down carefully to try and recover the full body.

“It’s a delicate process. They only remove a couple of inches at a time,” he said, “then they sift through the dirt. They don’t want to miss any evidence.”

As soon as they uncover every bone buried down there, Johnson said they will send the body to the Medical Examiner’s office for identification.
