Over 13,000 customers hit by power outage in Salt Lake Valley

SALT LAKE CITY — Almost 14,000 customers were hit with a power outage in the Salt Lake Valley Monday afternoon. By 5 p.m., the number had dropped to just under 9,000 customers.
Rocky Mountain Power said it was investigating the cause of the outage.
Bianca Velasquez, a communications person with RMP, told Jeff Caplan’s Afternoon News that Salt Lake City was hit the hardest.
Velasquez said a downed transmission line affected 7,800 customers in Salt Lake City.
The Cathedral of the Madeleine canceled a planned service to celebrate Pope Leo XIV due to the outage.
Power outage in Salt Lake likely caused by wind
Velasquez said RMP believed the issue was caused by high winds but hadn’t yet confirmed it. She encouraged Utahns to take precautions when it’s windy to prevent damage.
“Take some safety precautions. Tie down any furniture outdoors, any outdoor equipment, to just prevent these damages that could be causing these outages.”
Velasquez said it was hard to predict when service would be restored, but recommended people check its RMP’s outage tracker.
The power outage also affected traffic lights in the Salt Lake Valley, causing congestion.
