Construction site fire causes power outages in Provo

PROVO, Utah — Parts of Provo City were without power due to a fire that erupted early Saturday morning.
Update: An ATF Denver Field Division Certified Fire Investigator responded to the construction site fire, according to an ATF Denver X post.

On Sunday, investigators from Provo Fire and Rescue, Provo Police Department, the Utah State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms were at the scene of the fire, according to a Provo Fire and Rescue Instagram post.

Jeanie Atherton with Provo Fire Department said the fire started around 2:58 a.m. at 1620 S State St, and it was a second alarm fire, requiring extra assistance from Springville Fire Department and Mapleton Fire Department.
“When the crews arrived (the site) was fully engulfed,” Atherton said.
Three buildings were completely destroyed by the fire, causing up to $4.5 million in damages.
Atherton said by 7 a.m., fire crews had cleared the scene.
According to Janna-Lee Holland with Provo Police Department, the fire also caused power outages to parts of the city. She said the city’s power was restored between 5 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. on Saturday.
PPD said in an X post that the fire was burning at a construction site. The fire also caused a closure at 1100 S. on State Street at 4 a.m. on Saturday morning.

No injuries were reported at the fire and the incident is under investigation, the cause of the fire is unknown at this time, according to Atherton.
Police are currently asking for the public’s help with the investigation.
