PROVO — A water main burst in Provo Saturday, resulting in damage to nearby cars and businesses, and causing a water outage in the area.

Nicole Martin, the director of communications for Provo, said the break happened on Center Street east of Freedom Boulevard.

Martin said eastbound lanes were open at approximately 7:15 p.m., but westbound lanes would likely remain closed until Monday or Tuesday. Water was restored to the surrounding area by 7:45 p.m.

At 6:15 p.m., Martin said water would likely be restored to affected areas in approximately four to five hours.

“Due to the extent of the damage, the eastbound travel lanes will be closed until Monday, when crews will be able to tear out the remaining road and prep for paving on Tuesday. Westbound travel lanes should reopen tonight,” Martin said.

She said businesses in the area that weren’t impacted by the water main break were still open for business.

“Approximately 15 cars and several businesses were damaged due to the rocks that flew out during the main line break,” Martin said.
