Rancid meat, strong smell prompts Ogden police and fire response

OGDEN — A strong smell emanating from the building that housed a meat company prompted Ogden fire and police officials to respond in force Tuesday. 

Ogden Fire Chief Mike Slater told KSL all of the meat inside was rancid after the building was abandoned. Google Maps shows the property housed Mountain West Meats, a local butcher shop and meat processor.

Slater could not say why the building was abandoned.  However, the company’s Google search results list it as “temporarily closed.” We called the phone number listed on Mountain West Meats’ website and received a message telling us the number is out of service. 

In the meantime, the strong smell of rancid meat permeated the air outside the Ogden spot, near 37th St. and Quincy Ave. 

“We anticipate maybe a day or two of the smells — they should dissipate over the next day or two,” Slater said. “We made sure that it was safe for the clean-up company to go in and start cleaning up the perishable material.” 

Slater also could not say exactly how much meat remained in the building. 

“It’s just something we’re monitoring closely, but . . . the cleanup company is on site as we speak cleaning it up,” he said.
