Residents fight to save Logan ash trees

LOGAN, Utah — A battle is brewing over 17 Logan ash trees. City officials want them removed to make way for a water line, but a coalition of residents wants them preserved. 

The ash trees line Canyon Road. The city believes that would be the best place for a water line that would supply new developments. 

“I think they expected us to be excited and happy about this. But nobody was,” said Alexa Sand, a professor at Utah State University.

The people who want to preserve the trees understand the need for the water line. However, they feel it could be placed elsewhere. 

According to Sand, members of the citizen-formed Canyon Road Coalition will be attending the meetings related to the project. They want to make sure the city knows their opinions. 

“[I] really feel like these trees … are our past. They’re older than any of us. They’re also the future,” said Sand. “I love the thought of maybe my grandkids or great-grandkids coming and seeing the place where their mom or dad grew up and being able to point to those trees.” 

The city plans to remove the Logan ash trees next spring.
