SALT LAKE CITY — Following the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, and in accordance with state statute, the general counsel of the Utah Legislative Branch has found S.B. 174 Abortion Prohibition Amendments is now legal to take effect.

That means, Utah’s trigger law is now in effect. Most abortions in the state now are banned.

In 2020, the Utah Legislature passed S.B. 174 that disallowed all elective abortions in the state. There were exceptions in the cases of incest, rape or medical emergency. This was all contingent on a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, which came Friday.

On Friday evening, roughly a couple hundred people gathered in front of the Utah State Capitol to protest the U.S Supreme Court’s decision.
