SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake Plaza Hotel announced it will close on Nov. 1, then be demolished.
The structure at 122 W South Temple in downtown Salt Lake City, was built in 1973.

According to its website, it has 150 guest rooms, an on-site gym and a pool, among other amenities. It also boasts views of Temple Square, surrounding downtown and the Wasatch mountains.
A press release from Property Reserve, the real estate arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that owns the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, cited rising maintenance costs and aging infrastructure as reasons for the decision.
Demolition will remove the main building and attached parking garage. Property Reserve said the process will “allow recyclable materials to be handled sustainably.”
What’s next for the Salt Lake Plaza Hotel site?
After the hotel is torn down, the property will be used as a parking lot for the upcoming open house of the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is planned for April 2027.
Currently, the Salt Lake Temple is being renovated.
According to Property Reserve, the church will take over management of the land once the hotel closes and is torn down. Landscaping will be installed.
Plans for the site after the temple open house have not been determined.
