SALT LAKE CITY — Police detained 46 people on Tuesday, and arrested ten, after a targeted patrol of the Jordan River Trail.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release that they’d had their eyes on crime in this area since November 2024.

According to the news release, a SLCPD drone operator viewed a group of people along the trail between 500 North and 700 North in Salt Lake City, reportedly after the trail’s curfew time.

“Officers positioned themselves to the north and south of the group. Officers (then) announced their presence and began contacting the group,” police said in the news release. “While doing so, several people started running away.”

Drones used to trace suspects near Jordan River Trail

Officers said the drone operator helped them locate nine people running through backyards around the Jordan River Trail, leading police to detain those people.

In total, the SLCPD said it detained 46 people who were all identified. They booked ten of those people into jail. Three people were cited, and police said 33 of the 46 detained were issued warnings.

“Of the 10 people arrested, officers booked 31-year-old Ivan Carbajal on charges of felony possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, failure to stop at the command of law enforcement, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and warrants,” SLCPD said.

Police said officers also booked Rayford Benally, 33, on “felony charges of being a non-compliant sex offender, misdemeanor charges of sex offender in a protected area, possession of controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and six felony warrants for failure to register as a sex offender.”

SLCPD also arrested Annie Woodard, Nicholas Martinez, Samuel Cunningham, Austin Richens, Lilinoe Pulotu, Ricky Martinez, Richard Sanchez, and Daniel Ortiz.
