One person in custody following Sandy gun grab attempt

SANDY, Utah — Sandy police say one person is in custody after an attempted gun grab during a shoplifting investigation.
The Sandy Police Department responded to the shoplifting call at an AT&T store Thursday just after 4 p.m.
When police arrived at the store, located at 11300 So. State St., the individual was combative. A struggle ensued and it continued out of the store. During the struggle, police say the person attempted to grab the Sandy officer’s gun, discharging one round into the parking lot asphalt.
The individual was eventually subdued and taken into custody.
“Those circumstances are extremely dangerous for not only the officers, but the suspect and the general public,” said Sandy Police Department Lieutenant Jason Nielsen to KSL NewsRadio. “Because we don’t know what the suspect’s intent is when they grab the gun and are trying to pull it away from the officers.”
No injuries were reported from the incident.
Sandy police does not consider it to be an Officer Involved Critical Incident, which would trigger protocol such as an outside investigation. However, the department turned the investigation over to Draper police to be thorough and impartial.
The individual’s identity has not been released.
