SALT LAKE CITY — The occupant of a vehicle is safe after the car they were in got stuck on railroad tracks, and was struck by a train in Springville on Saturday night.

According to Springville Fire and Rescue, the driver “delayed exiting the vehicle,” but was able to safely exit the car before the train struck, with the help of another person.

“(A) citizen hero recognized the delay and assisted the occupant to swiftly escape the vehicle just before it was struck and carried 100 yds,” the fire and rescue said in a Facebook post.

Fire and rescue also said the engineers on the train helped to give the driver enough time to safely escape the vehicle.

“Shout out to swift action by Locomotive Engineer and Springville PD. The train engineer’s swift action resulted in sufficient time for the occupant to escape the vehicle,” fire and rescue said. “We discovered that even Fire Engine Engineers have heroes, Locomotive Engineers!”

The Facebook post continued giving the the train’s BNSF engineer a shout out by fire and rescue.

“A great job by the BNSF Engineer also saved her life, due to his attentiveness and quick action,” the Facebook post said. “The BNSF supervisor said it is not normal to slow as fast and as safely as he did, feathering 5 engines brakes.”

Springville Police Department asked the public to avoid the area where the crash occurred at 400 West Railroad crossings at 400 North while it was being investigated on Saturday.

Police said no injuries were reported at the scene.
