SALT LAKE CITY — A 15-member council will soon be regularly sharing its perspectives and opinions with the Utah State Board of Education but that council will be entirely comprised of students.

Calling all high school juniors and seniors, the State Board of Education wants to hear from you. Students from across the state are being encouraged to apply to the newly approved Student Advisory Board.

Board Member Linda Hansen says she got the idea from a student.

“It wasn’t something we had ever thought of before,” says Hansen. “But she and I worked on it for several months and worked with our board leadership.”

The first of its kind, Student Advisory Council will meet bi-monthly, as well as regularly attending school board meetings. The board hopes to have the council filled by November and they’re looking for a diverse group of students.

“We don’t want just the ‘Straight A’ students,” explains Hansen. ” We want everybody who’s got any kind of experience that may be a little bit different in Utah, as well.”

The Board of Education voted unanimously in favor of the council during a meeting today.

Applications can be found at the USBE website and to be considered, students must be 16 and a junior or senior.

Applications are due Friday, October 5, 2018.

We want to hear from you.
