Toddler killed in chain-reaction crash

PROVO — Police say a chain reaction crash involving four vehicles is to blame for the death of a three-year-old Sunday.
The same accident put the child’s infant brother in the hospital in critical condition.
Provo police say a Ford Escape was stopped along with two other cars on University Avenue, waiting to make a left turn on 3700 North, when a utility truck from the city of Pleasant Grove slammed into the back of the Escape at a high rate of speed. The Escape took the brunt of the impact, becoming crushed between vehicles as it hit a white sedan which in turn struck a minivan.
Provo Police Detective Nick Dupaix said a family of four was inside the Ford Escape, including the two children, in the back seat. The three-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Her eight-month-old brother was airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital for treatment. Their mother was in critical condition initially but had been upgraded to stable condition by last night.
Six other people were injured in the chain reaction, according to police, though all of them are now expected to recover.
