SALT LAKE CITY — Around 150 Utahns gathered on the first day of the 2025 legislative session to rally for transgender rights, highlighting concerns over increasing anti-transgender legislation in the state.
The rally took place during the lunch hour on the south steps of the state Capitol.
“Every year, time after time, anti-trans and anti-queer laws are being passed. At this point, it’s multiple bills every year,” said Angel Showalter, the rally’s organizer.
Showalter said that these issues affect not just the transgender community, but all people.

As the group entered the Capitol, a youth cheer recital was underway in the rotunda. Rally-goers moved quietly through the building, carrying signs and flags, in order to avoid disturbing the performance.
Some parents and students in the audience showed their support, while others questioned the timing of the rally.
One parent asked Showalter, “You’re still going to do it in front of the kids?”
Showalter responded, “Yes, trans kids matter too.”
Yesenia Ortiz, a rally participant, expressed her concerns over President Donald Trump’s recent remarks that there are only two genders.
“I think it’s alarming and sad, the time we’re living in … it’s concerning,” Ortiz said.
Rep. Sahara Hayes, D-Salt Lake City, was the only lawmaker present at the rally, attending the introductory speech before leaving.

The rally concluded on the south steps, where speakers emphasized the importance of standing up for transgender rights.
“We exist—no matter how much you legislate us, we will still be here, and we are here to thrive,” Showalter said, urging the crowd to continue the fight for transgender equality.
The demonstration underscored ongoing tensions over transgender rights in Utah, as activists continue to push back against legislation they view as discriminatory.
