Students and faculty at University of Utah can now open carry with a permit

SALT LAKE CITY — As students and faculty return to classes at the University of Utah, the school is reminding students about its updated firearm policy.

Utah law was updated with HB128, allowing anyone who is 18 years of age or older and who has a concealed-carry permit to bring a firearm to campus whether the weapon is concealed carried or open carried.
Previous to this year, the University allowed firearms on campus only if the person carrying had a concealed-carry permit.
However, the University asks students and faculty who sees someone carrying a gun on campus to call campus police. They will check whether that person has a permit. If not, they could be charged with a Class-A misdemeanor and could face up to a year in jail or a $2,500 fine.
Students who do not want to room with someone that has a firearm may request to be in a room with someone else.
