University of Utah spring football game cancelled

SALT LAKE CITY — There will not be a spring football game at the University of Utah this year.
The spring football game had become a tradition and a way to honor Aaron Lowe and Ty Jordan, two former players who were victims of gun violence.
But the game is cancelled. Josh Furlong, KSL sports director, said the games had become fertile grounds for coaches to swipe players from other teams, even though the transfer portal was closed.
According to Furlong, the other coaches used the game as a way to spy on prospects. Players would unenroll from the University and then enroll as a walk-on player at the other school, he said.
Also, the scrimmage counted as one of the 15 practices allowed by the NCAA.
For fans, the game wasn’t completely satisfying because the starters often didn’t play.
The University of Utah is still planning a fan event for April 18th.
